A sensational hole in one inspired a Yorkshire side to victory in the third round of the 2023 British Clubs Mixed Championships.
Wetherby GC’s men’s captain Tom Robinson aced his tee shot at the par three eleventh hole at York GC to help his side to a 4-1 victory.
Tom’s gap wedge landed past the pin and spun back into the hole as he and his partner Jean Woodcock won their match 5&4.
It was followed by victories from Clive Carnazza and Sue Smith, Doug Allaway and Maria Carnazza and Dennis and Barbara Skinner as Wetherby won their second away victory of the competition.
Next up is a home tie against Lancashire’s Westhoughton GC, who edged a great game against Rochdale 3-2.
Elsewhere in the northern region, Scarborough South Cliff GC pipped Alnmouth GC 3-2 and will now host City of Newcastle GC, who also defeated Scotland’s sole remaining side Muthill GC 3-2.
In the Midlands, Nottinghamshire’s Beeston Fields GC survived thunderstorms and biblical rain to defeat Erewash Valley GC 4-1.
Their reward is a trip to Lincolnshire Belton Park GC, who enjoyed a good away win against Leicestershire’s Market Harborough 4-1.
Joining them in round four will be Wales’ Rhos on Sea GC, who nicked a deserved 3-2 victory against Cheshire’s Portal GC.
It has earned them a home tie against Derbyshire Bakewell GC, who also came through 3-2 against Erewash Valley’s second entry.
In the south east, Camberley Heath’s excellent run was halted by their Surrey rivals Betchworth Park GC who won 4-1. Betchworth will now play Royal Eastbourne GC, who saw off Kent’s Nizels GC 4-1.
The other south east region fourth round will see Northampton County GC visiting Brampton Park GC after Northamptonshire edged last year’s finalists Bedfordshire GC 3-2 and Brampton pipped Abridge GC by the same margin.
Meanwhile in the south west division, Brickendon Grange GC enjoyed an emphatic 5-0 win against Mid Herts GC and will travel to Royal Ascot GC, who earned a deserved 3-2 away victory against Moor Hall GC.
