A golfing couple turned up for the second round of the 2023 British Clubs Mixed Championships – only to discover they were at the wrong venue.
Wetherby GC’s Barbara and Dennis Skinner travelled an hour down the M62 for their match against Ryburn GC thinking it was an away game – only to find an empty club.
Turning around quickly, they then travelled back to their home club just in time to tee off in the fifth game.
Incredibly, with the score level at 2-2, the result depended on them – but they came through, winning 6&4 to complete a memorable day for club and players.
Philip and Ruth Jackson and Michael Hirst and Lizzie Haigh had given Ryburn an early 2-0 lead – but victories from the home side’s Helen Roe and Doug Allaway and Jean and Peter Bentley levelled matters – before Barbara and Dennis sealed the win.
