A Somerset side has become the first to reach the finals of the 2024 British Clubs Mixed Championships.
Worlebury GC, making their third appearance in the competition, defeated South Winchester GC 4-1 in the quarter finals to earn their place at the magnificent Celtic Manor Resort in south Wales on September 26 and 27.
Worlebury have enjoyed smooth progress in this year’s competition, beating Exminster GC in round one, Dorset’s Ashley Wood GC in round two, Cornwall’s Lanhydrock GC in round three and Berkshire’s Mill Ride GC in round four.
Their south-west regional final win against South Winchester was closer than the scoreline suggested though as chairman Graham Hewlett explained.
He said: “Winchester brought a very strong team. They came up the day before for a courtesy practice round and pushed us all the way.
“They were leading in a couple of the matches at halfway, but my team managed to hold on for the 4-1 victory, with several matches going all the way. We can’t wait for the finals now.”
Worlebury and the three other regional winners qualify for the finals at the end of September.
