Scotland’s finest on the march

A Scottish side is hoping to inspire other teams north of the border as the 2024 British Clubs Mixed Championships reaches the quarter final stage.

Perthshire’s Muthill GC, now in their third year in the competition, moved one step closer to the national finals with a narrow 3-2 away victory over Northumberland’s Stocksfield GC – the tie being determined on the 19th hole.

Their win over the 2022 finalists earned them a slot in the last eight and a northern final home tie against 2023 finalists Scarborough South Cliff GC, who themselves enjoyed an impressive away victory over Lancashire’s Pleasington GC 4.5-0.5.

It was a triumph that was closer than the scoreline suggested though, with several of the matches being decided on the 17th hole.

There will be a neutral venue for Midlands final where Shropshire’s Lilleshall Hall GC will tackle Leicestershire’s Kibworth GC after Glen Gorse GC generously offered to host the quarter final clash.

Lilleshall Hall reached the last eight with a tight 3-2 win over Cheshire’s Portal GC while Kibworth ended the fine run of Norfolk’s Heacham Manor GC by the same scoreline.

In the south east, 2022 finalists Bedfordshire GC’s bid for a second trip to the finals was ended at the last 16 stage by Abridge GC 3-2.

Next up for the Essex side is a trip to Royal Mid Surrey GC, who enjoyed a terrific 4-1 away victory over county rivals Sunbury GC.

The south west regional final will see Somerset’s Worlebury GC take on Hampshire debutants South Winchester GC.

This year’s four regional winners will qualify for the finals at the magnificent Celtic Manor Resort in south Wales on September 26 and 27.
