Two Yorkshire sides brought an exciting climax to the first round of the inaugural 2022 National Inter-Clubs Mixed Team Championships.
Redcar’s Wilton GC travelled to Beverley & East Riding GC, narrowly losing 3-2 as Beverley progressed to play Scarborough South Cliff GC in round two.
Elsewhere Howley Hall GC made it two wins out of two by seeing off Wetherby GC 5-0, having previously overcome Bracken Ghyll GC in the preliminary round.
Across the border in Lancashire, Longridge GC set up a home tie against Fleetwood GC after beat Leyland GC 4-1 while Rochdale GC pipped Westhoughton GC 3-2.
Further south, Rayleigh GC defeated West Essex GC 3.5-1.5 while Mid Herts GC needed the tightest of finishes to beat Welwyn Garden City GC 3-2.
The tie was 2-2 when the final match left the 18th green all square – only for Mid Herts’ last pair to emerge triumphant two extra holes later.
Another close game saw Leicestershire’s Glen Gorse GC overcome Market Harborough GC 4-1, with all five games reaching the last two holes.
In Surrey, East Horsley’s Drift GC defeated Sunbury GC B 4-1 while Derby GC edged Erewash Valley GC 3-2.
All four regional winners will qualify for the national finals at Boavista Golf Resort in Portugal’s Western Algarve in November.
