Doubling down on success

Two clubs have doubled their chances of success as the 2025 British Clubs Mixed Championships reaches the third round.

Barton-on-Sea GC, a beautiful coastal course on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire overlooking the Isle Of Wight and Windlesham GC, a wonderfully challenging course in Surrey, both entered two teams into this year’s competition.

And both are still standing after a series of exciting second round ties.

Windlesham GC A won 4-1 against Kent’s Nizel’s GC and will next travel to Camberley Heath GC, who edged Farnham GC B 3-2.

Enfield GC enjoyed a second 3-2 victory of the campaign, this time against Sunbury GC to earn a visit to Windlesham GC B, who beat Farnham GC A 4-1.

Barton-on-Sea GC A edged Skylark GC 3-2 and will now visit Southampton’s Boundary Lakes GC, who pipped Rowlands Castle GC 3-2.

Barton-on-Sea’s B team enjoyed a well-deserved 3.5-1.5 away victory over Winchester’s Hockley GC and will now entertain Berkshire’s Sunningdale Heath GC, who defeated Eton College GC 4-1.

In the Midlands, Cambridgeshire’s Brampton Park GC enjoyed a narrow 3-2 away victory against Northampton County GC B thanks to a win for their fifth and deciding pair on the last green.

It set up a home tie against Brickendon Grange GC – and a repeat of the 2023 grand final – after the Hertfordshire side just got the better of 2022 finalists Bedfordshire GC 3-2.

Both sides were in different regions then and Cambridgeshire’s Brampton Park will be hoping to overturn the result of the previous final, which Brickendon won 3-2.

It was a similar scoreline in Lincolnshire in the battle of Belton as Belton Woods GC beat Belton Park GC to set up a visit to Norfolk’s Barnham Broon GC, who beat Heacham Manor GC 3-2.

Leicestershire’s Beedles Lake GC got the better of their county rivals Glen Gorse GC 3-2 and will now travel to Wollaton Park GC, who edged Chilwell Manor GC away 3-2.

In the south east, Abridge GC are flying the flag for their county after beating Essex Golf & Country Club 3-2 – a scoreline that was matched by Camberley Heath GC in their narrow defeat of Farnham GC B, where three matches were decided on the 18th.

Abridge will now be visiting Stowmarket GC in round three after the Suffolk side pipped Flempton GC 3-2 with two matches being decided on the 19th.

A tight game between newcomers Worthing GC and Goodwood GC saw Goodwood clinch the game 3-2 on the 20th hole of the last match. They will now host Royal Eastbourne GC, who defeated Littlehampton GC 4-1.

In the south west, Royal Ascot GC A defeated Leominster GC A 4-1 and will now host the Herefordshire GC, who also triumphed 4-1 over Tenby GC.

Exeter Golf & Country Club conquered Cornwall’s China Fleet GC 4-1 to earn a trip to Somerset and reigning champions Worlebury GC, who enjoyed a 4-1 away victory with the last two matches being decided on the 18th.

In Scotland, Dundee’s Downfield GC enjoyed a 3.5-1.5 victory over Airdrie GC and will now travel south of the border to City of Newcastle GC, who scraped a narrow 3-2 away win against 2022 finalists Stocksfield GC.

Elsewhere in the north, Llandudno (Maesdu) GC continued their march with a 4-1 victory over Vale Abbey GC and will now host Eaton (Chester) GC, who defeated Lymm GC 4.5-0.5.

Haydock Park GC ran out 4-1 winners over Rochdale GC to earn a home tie against Oldham GC, who ended Burnley GC’s run in the competition by the same scoreline.

2023 finalists Scarborough South Cliff GC triumphed 3-2 against York GC and will now host Ryburn GC, who beat Woolley Park GC by a similar margin.
