Teams from Somerset and Surrey will contest the final of the 2024 British Clubs Mixed Championships tomorrow after an exciting semi-final day of action at Celtic Manor in south Wales.
Worlebury GC will take on Royal Mid Surrey after seeing off Leicestershire’s Kibworth GC 3-2 and Scotland’s Muthill GC 3.5-1.5 respectively.
But neither side had it all their own way as sides battled soft underfoot conditions at the tricky Montgomerie course.
In the first semi-final, Iain Bond and Susan Spash gave Royal Mid Surrey the perfect start with a 6&5 victory over Gregor McGregor and Katie Holden.
Muthill bounced back in the second rubber as James Donaldson and Hazel Dean enjoyed a 3&1 victory over Mark Boyle and Mhairi Lowry.
But Royal Mid Surrey turned the screw as John Bissett and Joanna Nakielny beat John McPake and Jacq Scott 6&5 and Michael and Monica Morrow overcame John Lees & Lesley Malkin 4&3.
That mean’t that the halved rubber between Peter Brooks and Anne Brooks and Niall Seddon & Gill Tarbet didn’t matter as Royal Mid Surrey triumphed 3.5-1.5.
All four teams in the third year of the championships were new to the finals and Worlebury GC started their last four clash well with a 3&2 victory for Alix Kew and Lauren Hanson over Chris Palmer and Ruth Palmer.
Kibworth hit back in style as Mike & Julia Holley saw off Graham & Sam Hewlett 7&6 and George Race and Emily Blount beat Paul and Maxine Gardiner 2&1.
But Somerset’s Worlebury secured victory as Steve Taylor and Helen Clarke defeated Neil Driver and Wendy Quilter 7&6 and Russell and Emma Bourton pipped Paul and Fran Jelly 1 up.
Both finalists will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of 2022 champions Stoneham GC and 2023 winners Brickendon Grange GC, from Hertfordshire.
