Mighty Muthill make mixed finals

A Scottish side with fewer than 140 members has become the first from north of the border to reach the finals of the 2024 British Clubs Mixed Championships.

Muthill GC, making their third appearance in the competition, defeated Scarborough South Cliff GC 3.5-1.5 in the quarter finals to earn their place at the magnificent Celtic Manor Resort in south Wales on September 26 and 27.

In pouring rain throughout the day, the small nine-hole club from rural Perthshire held their nerve to triumph in the northern final and cap a superb summer season.

Muthill have enjoyed smooth progress in this year’s competition after a bye in round one – beating Dundee’s Downfield GC in round two, East Lothian’s Longniddry GC in round three and Northumberland’s Stocksfield GC in round four.

Match secretary John Lees said: “We feel this has been a tremendous achievement for such a small club with a membership of 132.

“At times we struggle to get a team but somehow we do and very much look forward to playing in the competition.

“The first year we played we thought just go and enjoy the game as we won’t get into the next round, but we did. Now, after competing in the competition for the last three years we are in the finals at Celtic Manor Resort.

“We anticipate the draw now every year and I look forward to more teams from Scotland participating in the future.”

Muthill will join south west champions Somerset’s Worlebury GC, Midlands winners Kibworth GC and the south east regional champions in the finals at the end of September.
